The following quotation, from this article , in today's Times of London interviewing Sacha Baran Cohen on the success of his "Borat" persona, is very revealing; not only of the continued existence of, but also some of the different defining characteristics between, the three social classes in Britain, as we have touched upon them in lecture. (The supporting comment on America is pertinent, on the MacNeil thesis that southern American landowners are -- as their Elizabethan accent reveals -- vestigal British aristocracy who emigrated to the American colonies.) One of the most intriguing questions about Baron Cohen's characters is: why do so many people fall for the act? Partly he relies on good manners and politeness: “Ali G and Borat worked very well in England with the upper class because they were so polite. They would keep this person in their room. Members of the working class might have thrown him out; members of the middle class might not have revealed themselves as much.“We found that the Deep South of America was very good for Borat because people were so polite and so welcoming of strangers. They were so proud of their American heritage that they would talk to this person about America and American values for an hour and a half.” Immigration policies and the status of immigrants in their host countries are today current issues that provoke discussion all over the world. Britain is no exception of this. There has been large discussion in many countries on whether countries should restrict, or conversely, extend their immigration policies. Usually, the direction is "the road of restrictions", although other possibilities are being discussed as well. For example, there has recently been active discussion on the situation of London's estimated 400,000 illegal immigrants. The discussion heated up after Boris Johnson, the Conservative Mayor of London, proposed that the possibility for an 'earned amnesty' for illegal immigrants should be studied. The idea of the proposition was that long-term illegal immigrants should be allowed to earn the right to stay in the country. This suggestion naturally got criticism, and was soon branded 'naive' by others, who argued that amnesty for illegal immigrants would just cause more problems (Guardian.co.uk). Whenever there is a problem related to immigration, it seems to arouse arguments from many different points of view. This paper seeks to have a brief look at the immigration in Britain, focusing on the attitudes that the British might have towards immigrants. My intention is to look at the subject from different angles, by first introducing some of the history of immigration in Britain, and then moving on to the multicultural relations in the British society today, and to the attitudes related to that. I will also take a look at how immigrants and refugees have been presented in the British media, and consequently, how this might affect the immigration attitudes of the British population. Throughout history, there has been migration, and Britain has a long history of accepting immigrants from other countries. Until the 1960s, Commonwealth citizens were allowed to move to Britain rather freely. Citizens of 'The Old Empire' were needed as work force especially during the formation of the new National Health System in the 1940s. Britain received lots of immigrants from the Commonwealth countries to work in hospitals and in the London transport (Luke). The Commonwealth Immigrants Acts of the British Parliament in 1960s and the Immigration Act of 1971 restricted the influx of immigrants from the New Commonwealth countries to Britain. The Nationality Act in 1981 during Margaret Thatcher's reign made the rules for gaining British nationality even more strict (Luke). During those times, immigrants were often seen as a burden to the host country, and many local people thought that immigrants were taking the jobs of the British people. Many people were prejudiced against the immigrants. Also Enoch Powell, who was a Member of Parliament back in the 1960s, gave a controversial speech concerning immigration, in which he said that 'coloured' immigrants should be sent back to their countries (Commission for Racial Equality 35). Some people supported Powell and some criticised his speech rather fiercely. Consequently, Enoch Powell was sacked (Luke). After Powell's speech on immigrants, the legislation concerning race relations has developed, and it was made unlawful to discriminate someone of another race or ethnic origin. The milestone in this was the Race Relations Act of 1976, which was amended in 2000. Also the 。

In modern society, we tend to become more and more aware of our living environment or physical environment, because we is not clean as before. So many people now choose their house as to its environment but not its location and expenses to afford it. As we all know, the environment pollution is more and more serious during these years, what we could do is to make great efforts in protecting environment gradually. As to government pollution, as to common people. We also try to protect it and make it remain clean. Although we have managed to protect the environment to a certain extent. It is still a very long way to go. The phoenix Mountain is a place of interest. Every day, it welcome a great many visitors. Years ago, a few people didn`t care about environment protection there. For example, waste paper, plastic bags and tins carelessly disposed could be seen everywhere. A few visitors not only killed animals, caught birds, but also picked up flowers and dug trees. What`s more, some of them set fire for cooking in the woods. People showed a real concern over the problem . And fortunately, measures have been taken to deal with the problem. As a result, the environment there has changed. For example, the visitors take away their rubbish. They do not hunt any more. Besides, people protect trees and all kinds of plants. Futhermore, all the tourists bring their food for lnch by themselves in order not to cause fire. Now ,it is more beautiful than before. We must sing high praise for the good deeds. man and environment the world we live in is becoming more and more intolerable because of environmental destruction. bird flu and sars are two typical examples that environmental destruction may threaten our life. besides, forest destruction , water and air pollution result in decrease of planting land and unpleasant weather. serious as the problem seems, we can come up with some measures to deal with it. first of all, the authorities should adopt the policy of “sustainable development”, and laws concerning environmental protection should be put into effect and enforced strictly just as our government has been doing. what' s more, every citizen should realize the seriousness of the problem and make concerted efforts to protect our environment. in addition, planting trees helps improve and beautify the environment.。

(For children and primary school pupils) (一) Developing oral communication skills Oral communication skills here refer to listening and speaking skills. They are very important skills for beginners. Children learning their native language begin by understanding through listening. They comprehend the language long before they can speak. With primary school pupils, it is better that we let them listen and understand the language first. Let them speak gradually when they feel ready and comfortable with it. In fact, listening and speaking are always used inseparably in real life situations. However, listening is an important basis for speaking. The following are some listening and speaking activities you can use in the classroom. Read them and discuss which ones are adaptable in your teaching and which ones are not practical for your situations and explain why. Listening Activities Listen and act/follow instructions This type of activity is also known as TPR (Total Physical Response). TPR is an extremely useful and adaptable teaching technique in the primary classroom for language learning. With TPR, children listen to their teacher telling them what to do and then do it. This is also the way how children acquired their first language. They are able to do things according to what they hear long before they are able to speak the language. By doing TPR, you are also giving chil- dren a sense of security. It does not matter if they cannot pronounce the word or say the sentence. They can simply listen and watch others to understand the meaning. For TPR activities, the easiest is to start with classroom commands, 'touch' activities and verbs in action, etc. (二)Speaking activities Speaking activities do not need to be always reading aloud, reciting dialogues or repeating what the teacher said. When we speak, we speak with a purpose and we speak with interest as well. Therefore, we need to create interesting topics and genuine purposes for children to speak the language. Of course some imitations and repetitions are necessary to prepare children to speak, but even with imi- tations and repetitions, we can make them more interesting and meaningful. One important point to note is that speaking only develops gradually with plenty of practice and with a lot of encouragement. We should have realistic expectations with children beginning with English. The following are some speaking activities. Some of them are basic speaking activities and some of them are more advanced speaking activities. They can only be applied with different levels of learners and in different contexts. 本文摘自: 。

1. Newspaper English“Learning a language is not merely an academic exercise. Students of English want to be able to use the language they have acquired in the same way as English people use it. They not only want to understand spoken English and to make themselves understand; they also want to be able to appreciate English television and radio programmers, to laugh at English jokes, to sing English songs and to read English newspapers. This last wish often gives rise to some disappointment, when for example, the student who has passed his exams with top marks and has earned the commendation of his teacher finds that he is quite unable to understand the newspapers which he knows English people read every day. He realizes that he lacks something.“The deficiency is not entirely his fault. The difficulties in the fact that British newspapers have a style all of their own; or-rather-each paper has its own individual style forming part of a general journalistic pattern which we may loosely classify as 'Newspaper English'. The more popular dailies use a chatty, slangy, up-to-the moment way of writing, which, as often as not, leaves the foreign reader very bewildered, if not under a totally false impression. Here is a typical piece of such reporting:Curvaceous Patricia Potts, the girl with the smashing silhouette who was Scunthorpe's Dish of the Month in October-the dishiest dish in the area-was dished up with a dish of trouble on her way home from bingo last night. Two would-be muggers tried it on in Dark street near her home, but she sent them packing with handbag a-whirling, nails a-scratching and platform clogs a-kicking.“Even the most conscientious student might be forgiven for giving up at this point. And yet it must be realized that this style carries no problems for the millions that read every day.“Headlines are another problem. The English reader scans the headlines to find out what the news stories are about; the foreign student has to read the stories to find out what the headlines mean.“The popular press, in order to print as much information in as small a space as possible, had developed a content-packed sentence, very often crammed with compound words of a highly complicated nature, that needs to be treated warily at first. For example:Warwickshire police announced late last night that Arthur Prentice, a 35-year-old lorry driver of Babblesthorpe, Cambridgeshire, wanted in connection with the disappearance of 17-year-old Glenys Dennis from her home in Cambridge last March, had been arrested in the Solihull area of Birmingham and was helping police with their enquiries. There are at least 15 facts in this one sentence. Such has to be digested slowly. If the student of English attempts to absorb a lot of this sort of thing at speed, he will understand very little of what he has read。”
