master degree可分为授课式硕士学位和研究式硕士学位。
授课式的硕士学位课程一般为一年，学生必须上一定课时的课程，每学期写出规定数转尊论文，年终递交最后的毕业论文，共工修满180个学分。研究式硕士学位，通常是两年的时间，主要在导师的指导下从事论文写作工作。
硕士阶段授予的常见学位有文学硕士（MA），理学硕士（MSC）、法律硕士（LLM）、工商管理硕士（MBA）等。在硕士研究生阶段，没有完成毕业论文的课获得学校颁发的研究生文凭（postgraduate diploma）。
该文凭也是没有资格申请硕士学位的学生提供的过度性文凭！postgraduate certificate比postgraduate diploma要低一个层次，是因为挂科很多导致的。这样的两种证书在一定的情况下是可以认证degree的。
